The Situation

Oral-care startup quip shook up the industry with affordable pricing and direct-to-consumer subscriptions. As it prepared to enter Target, the brand needed a partner that shared its vision for the category. quip faced a daunting challenge in displacing traditional, household brands that had (had) dominated the category for decades.

Our Approach

An incremental sales strategy was key. quip would not compromise its D2C business in favor of a brick-and-mortar retail audience. We were tasked with sales forecasting, inventory planning, and sales growth.

Target’s brand-friendly approach to in-store marketing paired perfectly with quip’s focus on design and consumer experience.

1. Launch Planning

We worked tirelessly with the quip team and Target buyer to create value and identify opportunities to grow the relationship. Our retailer relationships and cross-team communication proved invaluable in our partnership with quip, helping us identify numerous win-win scenarios for Target and quip.

Our logistics planning and inventory management came in handy, too, as launch-week sales doubled their initial forecasts.

These haven’t been posted on @quip’s social media, but they sure could be.

2. Strategy

After a successful launch, we pushed to uncover additional opportunities and make the most of quip’s initial momentum. Our willingness to push Target beyond its typical parameters opened up multiple opportunities for future executions, including a branded endcap display during the Mother’s Day and Father’s Day seasons.

From launch, quip has ranked as the No. 2 oral-care brand at Target, and as a result, was recognized as a benchmark success story of a D2C business changing a category landscape at Target.
